Description

Classic buttery cookies with a delicate crisp texture and rich vanilla flavor, perfect for any occasion or tea time.

Ingredients

Scale

Butter Cookies Ingredients

  • 8 oz unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Beat butter, sugar, salt, and vanilla together until smooth and creamy. Add the egg yolk, mixing until fully incorporated, scraping down the bowl as needed.
  2. Add Flour: Gradually mix in the flour until just incorporated to form the cookie dough.
  3. Shape and Chill: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface, knead a few times until smooth, shape into a log, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for several hours or freeze for later.
  4. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Slice and Bake: Slice the chilled dough into 1/8-inch thick rounds. Arrange them 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  6. Bake and Cool: Bake the cookies for 16-18 minutes, or until the edges just begin to turn golden. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • You can freeze the dough log for up to 1 month; slice and bake directly from frozen, adding a minute or two to baking time.
  • Ensure butter is softened to room temperature for smoother mixing.
  • For even baking, slice cookies uniformly to about 1/8-inch thickness.
  • Store baked cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
