Ingredients
Scale
Shrimp and Coating
- 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 eggs, beaten
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Honey Glaze
- 1/3 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch + 2 teaspoons water (slurry)
- Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the shrimp coating: Pat the shrimp dry thoroughly with paper towels to ensure the coating adheres well. In a bowl, whisk together cornstarch, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs.
- Coat the shrimp: Dip each shrimp first into the flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and then back into the flour mixture again, pressing lightly so the coating sticks well and creates a thick layer.
- Fry the shrimp: Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet or deep pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Fry the shrimp in batches for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Remove the fried shrimp onto a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Make the honey glaze: In a small saucepan, combine honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- Thicken the glaze: Mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry, then stir it into the simmering honey mixture. Continue to cook and stir until the glaze thickens slightly, about 2 minutes.
- Coat the shrimp: Place the crispy shrimp in a large bowl and toss well with the prepared honey glaze until each piece is evenly coated.
- Garnish and serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped green onions on top for garnish, and serve the shrimp immediately for best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Make sure to pat the shrimp completely dry to get a crispy coating.
- Fry the shrimp in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, which can lower the oil temperature and make the shrimp soggy.
- The honey glaze can be adjusted for sweetness or acidity by varying the amount of honey or vinegar.
- Use fresh ginger and garlic for the best flavor in the glaze.
- This recipe can be doubled easily for a larger crowd.
- Serve immediately for optimal crispiness; leftover shrimp may lose crustiness.
