With easy-to-follow steps, you can enjoy fresh, warm breadsticks right from your oven in under two hours.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F/45°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Garlic Herb Butter Topping

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried parsley)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Optional: Grated Parmesan for topping

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large bowl or stand mixer, mix the flour, olive oil, salt, and yeast mixture until a soft dough forms. Add more flour as needed. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic, either on a floured surface or with a dough hook attachment.
  3. First Rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until it doubles in size.
  4. Shape Breadsticks: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12-15 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-8 inch rope and arrange on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Second Rise & Preheat Oven: Cover shaped breadsticks with a towel and let them rise for 20-30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Prepare Herb Butter: Mix melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, and thyme in a small bowl.
  7. Brush & Bake: Brush breadsticks generously with the garlic herb butter. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Finish & Serve: After baking, brush with any remaining garlic herb butter and sprinkle with grated Parmesan if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute the fresh parsley with dried parsley if fresh is unavailable.
  • For a more intense garlic flavor, add extra minced garlic to the butter mixture.
  • Make sure the water is not too hot when activating yeast, as it can kill the yeast.
  • To keep breadsticks soft, store them in an airtight container once completely cooled.
  • Grated Parmesan is optional but adds a nice savory touch when sprinkled on top.
