Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Filling
- 8 slices of bread
- Cream cheese for spreading (approximately 1/2 cup)
Egg Mixture
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup sugar
For Cooking and Serving
- Butter for frying (about 2 tbsp)
- Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the egg mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until fully combined and smooth.
- Flatten the bread: Use a rolling pin to gently flatten each slice of bread to make it easier to roll without tearing.
- Spread cream cheese: Spread a thin, even layer of cream cheese over each flattened slice of bread, covering the entire surface.
- Roll the bread slices: Carefully roll up each slice of bread tightly, starting from one edge to form compact roll-ups.
- Dip in egg mixture: Dip each rolled bread slice into the egg mixture, ensuring all sides are coated well.
- Pan-fry the roll-ups: Heat butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Place the coated roll-ups seam side down and cook, turning occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes per side.
- Serve and enjoy: Remove the roll-ups from the pan and serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup on the side for dipping or pouring.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for easier rolling and less tearing.
- Feel free to substitute cream cheese with fruit jam or peanut butter for variety.
- If preferred, dust with powdered sugar instead of coating with sugar in the egg mixture for a lighter sweetness.
- Ensure the pan is not too hot to prevent burning before the roll-ups are fully cooked inside.
- To keep warm, place cooked roll-ups on a baking sheet in a low oven (around 200°F) while frying the rest.
