Description

This comforting recipe features savory ground beef cooked in a rich homemade gravy, served over creamy mashed potatoes. Perfect for a hearty weeknight dinner, this dish combines simple ingredients to create a flavorful and satisfying meal that the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • ½ cup milk (or more as needed)
  • ¼ cup butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: Place the cubed potatoes in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer and cook until tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan.
  2. Mash the Potatoes: Add the milk and butter to the hot potatoes. Mash until smooth, adding more milk as needed to reach your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep the mashed potatoes warm.
  3. Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the onion becomes soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  5. Make the Gravy Base: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the beef mixture and stir well to combine. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  6. Add Liquids and Seasonings: Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  7. Simmer the Gravy: Allow the gravy to simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until it thickens to your liking. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Serve: Spoon the creamy mashed potatoes onto plates and top generously with the ground beef and rich gravy mixture. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot and enjoy your comforting meal.

Notes

  • For creamier mashed potatoes, increase the amount of milk or add a splash of cream.
  • If you prefer thicker gravy, simmer it a bit longer or add an extra teaspoon of flour mixed with water.
  • You can substitute russet potatoes with Yukon Gold for a buttery flavor.
  • To make this dish gluten-free, use gluten-free flour or cornstarch for thickening the gravy.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
