Description

These Matcha Cookies are delicate, soft, and infused with the vibrant, earthy flavor of high-quality matcha green tea powder. Perfect for dessert or a sweet snack, these Japanese-inspired cookies combine classic buttery cookie dough with the unique taste of matcha, resulting in a tender treat that’s easy to make and impressively flavorful.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder, culinary grade
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, matcha green tea powder, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined to distribute the matcha and leavening uniformly.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a separate large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together using a mixer or by hand until the mixture is light and fluffy, which helps create a tender texture.
  4. Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat the egg and vanilla extract into the butter and sugar mixture until smooth and fully incorporated, preparing the dough for binding.
  5. Combine Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix just until a soft dough forms; avoid overmixing to keep the cookies tender.
  6. Shape Dough: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of the dough and roll each into a ball, then place them on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart to allow room for spreading.
  7. Flatten Dough: Gently flatten each dough ball slightly with your fingers or the back of a spoon to encourage even baking and shape.
  8. Bake: Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges appear set but the centers are still soft, avoiding overbaking to maintain a tender cookie.
  9. Cool: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on it for 5 minutes to firm up slightly before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a stronger matcha flavor, increase the matcha powder to 1 1/2 tablespoons.
  • Do not overbake to maintain a soft and tender texture in the cookies.
  • Optional: add white chocolate chips for extra sweetness and a complementary flavor.
