Description

This One-Pan Sweet & Tangy BBQ Sausage Rice is a delicious and easy meal that combines savory sausage with flavorful vegetables, smoky spices, and a tangy BBQ sauce. It’s cooked all in one skillet, making it perfect for a quick weeknight dinner with minimal cleanup. The dish features tender rice infused with rich BBQ flavors and smoky paprika, accented by sautéed onions, bell peppers, and garlic, topped off with fresh parsley for a vibrant finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage and Rice

  • 1 lb sausage (such as Italian sausage or smoked sausage), sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice

Liquids and Sauce

  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand or homemade)

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (any color)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Seasonings and Oils

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt, to taste

Garnish

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Sear the sausage: In a large skillet or pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the sausage slices and cook until browned and slightly crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage from the pan and set aside.
  2. Cook the vegetables: In the same skillet, add the diced onion and bell pepper. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes, or until they begin to soften. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the rice and spices: Stir in the rice, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt. Let the rice toast for a minute or two, allowing it to absorb the flavors.
  4. Simmer with liquids: Pour in the chicken broth and BBQ sauce, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Cook the rice: Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed. If necessary, add more broth during the cooking process if the rice isn’t fully cooked yet.
  6. Combine and finish: Once the rice is cooked, return the sausage to the pan and stir everything together. Let it cook for another 2-3 minutes to heat through.
  7. Serve: Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute smoked sausage with Italian sausage or any sausage you prefer.
  • Feel free to use different colored bell peppers or add additional vegetables like corn or peas for variation.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes during the rice cooking step.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or in the microwave.
  • To make it gluten-free, ensure that your BBQ sauce and sausages do not contain gluten additives.
