Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes
- 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Spices
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
Optional Toppings
- Shredded cheese
- Sour cream
- Chopped green onions
- Avocado
Instructions
- Heat Oil and Sauté Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic, sauté for about 2 minutes until fragrant.
- Cook the Meat: Add ground beef or turkey and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess grease if needed for a leaner dish.
- Toast the Spices: Stir in chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1 minute to release and enhance the flavors of the spices.
- Add Beans and Tomato Ingredients: Mix in the drained kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and broth, stirring well to combine everything evenly.
- Simmer the Chili: Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and to blend flavors.
- Adjust Seasoning: Taste the chili and adjust seasoning if needed by adding more salt, pepper, or spices according to preference.
- Serve: Serve the chili hot with your choice of optional toppings such as shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, or avocado to enhance flavor and texture.
Notes
- For a leaner option, use ground turkey instead of beef.
- Optional cayenne pepper adds extra heat but can be omitted for a milder chili.
- Simmering longer can deepen the flavor, so don’t rush the cooking time.
- Beans can be substituted or added more according to preference.
- Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or can be frozen for longer storage.
