Description

This Stick of Butter Rice recipe is a simple, comforting baked rice dish infused with rich flavors from condensed French onion soup and beef broth soup, enriched by a whole stick of butter. Perfectly cooked in the oven, it delivers fluffy, savory rice with a slightly caramelized top that’s easy to prepare and great as a hearty side or main.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter (½ cup)
  • 1 can condensed French onion soup (10.5 oz)
  • 1 can condensed beef broth soup (10.5 oz)
  • 1 cup white rice (rinsed, not instant)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) ensuring it reaches the right temperature for baking the rice.
  2. Prepare baking dish: Lightly spray a baking dish with non-stick spray to prevent sticking and allow for easy cleanup.
  3. Rinse rice: Rinse the white rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch to ensure fluffier cooked rice.
  4. Place rice in dish: Spread the rinsed rice evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  5. Add soups: Pour both the condensed French onion soup and the condensed beef broth soup evenly over the rice in the dish.
  6. Stir: Using a mixing spoon, gently stir the rice and soups together to combine the flavors without breaking the rice grains.
  7. Add butter: Place the whole stick of butter on top of the rice and soup mixture, which will melt into the rice during baking adding richness.
  8. Cover and bake: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes, allowing the rice to absorb the flavors and cook through.
  9. Remove foil and stir: Carefully remove the foil, gently stir the rice to redistribute moisture, then continue baking uncovered for another 30 minutes until the rice is tender and slightly caramelized on top.
  10. Final stir and serve: Stir the baked rice one last time before serving hot to enjoy its savory, buttery flavor.

Notes

  • Rinsing the rice is important to prevent it from becoming too sticky.
  • Do not use instant rice as it will not hold up well in this baking method.
  • Covering the rice initially traps steam and helps cook the rice evenly.
  • Removing the foil for the second half of baking helps create a slightly caramelized, flavorful top layer.
  • Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
